Early last year I was commissioned by Fantasy Flight Games to work on a few of their cards for the card game, Call of Cthulhu. They have been released for sharing so I thought I’d post them here. This project was lots of fun and was my first experience working on a card game of the sort. Some of the cards I like more than others but I learned SO much working on these. I’ve since then worked on other games of theirs including Talisman: The Dragon and more on Call of Cthulhu. I hope to be able to share some of those as well soon. In other news, I’ve been working on laying out my next collection of artwork. Fish Hooks volume 1 has been taken down from being sold online. I’m currently working on volume two to bring to “Spectrum Art Live!” in May. I’m working on finding a good printer I can go through at the moment. I’ll have the finished book available for purchase in my etsy store, with links on my blog. I’ve been working on a few different pieces lately, mostly for myself. Things have been sort of crazy these last few weeks. I’ve been working on a few projects that I’ll have to wait to share here. Until then I’ll be posting more personal work, now that I have a little more time for it. Work has really started to pick up with The Red Valley and the first post has been put up on the blog. You can see it here: The Red Valley: Rain. It’s a challenge. The way I’m visioning the storytelling aspect of the project will require lots of work, which is good of course, but it will take more time to complete.

I’m hoping to have most of the first act (along with a few creature profiles) done by May of next year for Spectrum Fantastic Art Live. I’d like to have a small preview book of the project for sale there along with information about where I’d like the project to go. The project is still in its very early stages and so even I’m unsure of where it’s headed.

About two weeks ago I went to the Mojave Desert to visit family and while I was there I had the privilege of teaching a second-grade class how to draw a couple of animals. Since it was close to Halloween I taught them, step-by-step, how to draw a simple cat and a bat. It was way too much fun! I was also able to show them some of the work I’ve done for clients and my own projects. They were so excited! It’s always encouraging to have kids get excited about art and what you do as an artist.

I also made a few posters for the kids to take home. This was a promotional poster that I made for October. I had it printed on a glossy stock so the kids could roll them up – so it looked a little different from this image.

Of course to top it all off, I got a packet of letters from the kids yesterday, thanking me for visiting their class! I can’t express how much this means to me! They are the best thing ever! I’ve read every letter and will probably keep this in my desk (along with the letters from last year’s class). I love all of the lovely pictures each of the students drew for me!

Saw these on the stands yesterday in Imagine FX magazine. They were created for issue 75′s Q&A section. Be sure to check them out if you can! This round was particularly challenging but the two creatures feeding on the carcass up top were especially tricky. My goal was to make it look natural – as if the predators have always eaten this way. Nature can be incredibly gruesome and gory at times and I really wanted to show that without exaggerating it. In any case, these were so much fun to paint.

I’m currently visiting the Mojave desert area to see family. I’m also taking the opportunity to take some notes and photos for The Red Valley. I’m very excited to begin posting content for the project. I should begin in early November.

I will also be showing a piece in CCAC’s Faculty & Alumni show this year. I am incredibly honored and very humbled to be included in the show. I’ve also been asked to give a small talk about my experience at and after CCAC along with 4 other alumni. I’m very excited (and also very nervous) to be able to talk about my work and what I’ve done so far. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and seeing the work this year.

In other news, I’ll be showing and selling a few Limited Edition prints at Rendition Gallery’s “IT’S ALIVE” show. The show is focusing on creepy creatures for Halloween! If you’re in the Fort Collins area, you should check it out! It will be a really great show! I will take some photos of what I will be showing this week once everything is framed.

John’s dad came to visit last weekend and we took a trip to see the Redwoods. Such an amazing place; especially right now. Because of all of the rains, the forest has exploded with green moss, lichen, saplings and new ferns everywhere! It looks almost prehistoric! It was nice to go and “re charge” for a bit. Sadly, I don’t get to make it up there all too often.

I’ve been messing around with personal work lately too. Work on The Red Valley is picking up and I’ve begun to to lay out species ideas and thoughts about how the project will flow. I should be posting work on the blog come November this year. I’m very excited about the project and am really looking forward to exploring the concept.

Also, I just found out that I am on the confirmed exhibitor list for Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! - A new fantasy art convention being held in Kansas City, May of next year! It should be really awesome and the list of exhibitors is pretty incredible. Needless to say, I have lots of work to get done before next Summer!

This is a work is progress. I help run an activity on CGhub called Creature Planets. It’s a creature design activity and the current topic is to design a new mutant creature Villain for the TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) Universe. I chose to create a Honey Badger chick! Excited to get her done – I think I might put together a tutorial for this image if I get the time.

Been working away lately and the year is going by so fast! I can’t believe it’s already May. Where is 2011 going? So far this year has been full of surprising opportunities and good things.  Just finished two new pieces. I’ll post more about them later when they go live and such. These were super fun to create! I always enjoy painting Gnolls and weird alien creatures.

Trying to fit in personal work lately. Finding it harder to find time for things of the sort though. However, it is a must so I’ll be posting some progress here soon to stay on top of it more. I have a new project I’ve just become a part of. I’ll be working as lead artist for a new start-up in Seattle, WA. I’m very excited about the project (as it involves a huge amount of creatures) and I can’t wait to start sharing work. I’ll be posting news and such as we release content online. Of course, this is a freelance gig so I’ll be staying here in Oakland for the time being. :)

Obviously still a work in progress. I’ve warmed up to the image in the process of creating it but I’m not sure if I’ll keep it around. I’m wanting to update my website with some new work and this image was the beginning of that…

I am very happy to announce that I’ve found out that “Elegant Hunters” has made it into Spectrum this year! I got the letter in the mail yesterday. I am so incredibly happy and honored to be a part of this amazing publication! A big thank you to the judges for accepting me into this awesome book! I really can’t wait to see it.

Anyway, I’ve been working on updating my current portfolio. This is a study I did for my concept art section – Mother and offspring. I’m wanting to try and expand on some other subjects and show them in alternate views more. I don’t think I will expand this species though. I’m also working out some new environments and such too. I’m excited to start posting some new work! I haven’t been able to much in the way of personal work lately so I’m excited to actually have some time. I’ll be posting some progress on a few new images for my illustration section later this weekend. I’m also working on lots of new work for Sychey Games. It’s a very exciting project to be a part of! I’ll be posting lots more on it as we release content online.

Things have been bittersweet lately. The sketch up above was something I thought I’d finish but it’s been “collecting dust”. I’ve had some really great prospects for a new job coming up soon. I’m really very excited about it! It would definitely be a step up and more in the direction I’d like to go with my career. Of course, as it is with movies and video games, everything is “Non-disclosure”. I can share things as I go along though. I suppose (some) of the bitterness of the last couple of weeks would come from the fact that my project, The Morae River, has come to a close. I’ve decided to leave it alone for now. It’s hard to let go of a project that has been such a huge part of my life for the last three years. I feel as though the project has grown stagnant and I’ve fallen into a “system”. Which is always good but I need the project to be more than that. The Morae River taught me so much though. Really, I’m seeing it as somewhat of a jumping off point for my next project. I’ve realized that I’d rather not be in Solturna. Of course, even though I rarely have time to work on personal work my mind needs a place to go so I’ve decided to take on something new a little closer to “home”.

This is a rough banner for my new venture. I’ll be posting more on this project soon but for now it’s very “under construction”. I am really excited for it though. I feel as though it’s closer to the project I envisioned in the first place.

Things have been really busy as of late. Working on lots of projects all at once these days. This is always a good thing though. I’ll have more info and images to show when things go live and whatnot. I did post some of the new work on BrynnArt.com but I’ll post a more detailed look here in the coming months. Looking forward to sharing some of the work I’ve been able to do over the last few weeks. This was something I doodled in my sketchbook weeks ago and I thought I’d revisit the fellow. Trying to focus more and more on creatures as of late. I’m finding that they are really what I’d like to continue doing.  Still trying to figure out what I’d like to do with The Morae River…speaking of which:

I believe about a year ago I was asked by Brazilian Magazine – Contém Glúten to be included in their lovely publication. It features artists from all around the globe so be sure to check it out – There are some very talented people in there and I am very honored to be among them! It’s gorgeously designed! As you can see, the work I submitted is a bit older – The Greater Fugamus is still walking on two feet!

I’m also re-designing my website! This will be the 8th time I’ve done it since 2007 I believe. Sort of ridiculous right? I suppose I’ve never found a look that I’m fond of. I feel like I might stick with this look for a while though. It’s a simple design. I should have it up within the next few days.

I’m off to work on sketches for card illustrations…

Happy New year! I’m so excited to start a new year. 2011 has some exciting promises! I’ve been busy this last month so I don’t have much in the way of personal work. In other news my sister is getting married at the end of this month! I’ll be making the journey to Southern California, yet again, to celebrate with her and our families. I’m looking forward to seeing family and friends that I haven’t seen for some time. :)

Next week there will be a small work show entitled: “The Walls” at Periscope Cellars here in Oakland, Ca. I will have four small prints from The Morae River for sale there. There will also be a crafts bazzar where you can fine things like jewelry and small items of the sort! Hope you can come out if you’re in the area! This November I will be having a solo exhibition at Sagebrush Cafe.

The show will be up from November 20th to February 11th. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, Nov. 20th and 5pm if anyone can make it out to see the show! It will be lots of fun and I’m very excited to be showing in this space as it belongs to an amazing friend of mine. The work I will be displaying will all be fore sale and I will have smaller unframed prints as well. If you live in the L.A. area, Sagebrush is very easy to get to. If you live in the area I hope you can make it out to see the show – there will be plenty of good drinks!

As you might know I will have “Fish Hooks” on sale as well. It is a book I put together, containing sketches, illustrations and scribbles. I was recently asked to be in a show about animal art – work inspired by the other beings that share our planet. I will have three pieces on display from The Morae River, including a new species. This is going to be a really great show full of awesome work by some really talented artists. The opening is October 1st at 6 PM and will be up until the 30th. For A.P.E. this year I decided to put together a book promotional and personal work from the past year or so. I thought I’d take a few pictures of the book to give a feel for what it will look like. I’m really excited to have finally done this and I feel like it came out really well.

The book is 40 pages of full color drawings, sketches, and illustrations. It measures 8.5 x 11 (vertical) and is perfect bound. It will cost $22.00 usd. The last couple of days have been hard. I found out that my hometown is on fire. Southern California is notorious for wildfires. My family is ok for the most part but some of them had to be evacuated from their homes. Needless to say I’m a bit tense and wish I could be down there right now to help.

On a lighter note, The Morae River blog is back up and running. I’m glad I was able to perform some updates on it – it had been neglected for so long. There are still some minor glitches but for the most part it seems to be running smoothly. The image above is the most recent species to be added to Tul. I will be posting the full profile soon.

In other news, a former instructor and friend of mine is having a solo show. If you live in the Bay Area you should come out and see some art! Robert Hunt will be showing his landscapes at Periscope Cellars. This collection is stunning so be sure to stop by if you can. Here is a video of him painting if you’re interested.

Lately, I’ve been trying to come to terms with my sketchbook. I’ve never been to proud of my sketchbook, which is why I rarely post anything from it. So in an effort to become a little more comfortable with it, I need to start posting it here.

After a good 4 days of looking through forums, sifting through websites, and pulling my hair out, I have finally been able to get Fish Hook Studio back up and running. Of course, I didn’t do this alone. In fact, I was ready to call it quits and just forget about the blog entirely when an old friend showed up and helped me get through what was wrong. An extremely big thank you goes to Josh Blanton for helping me out. I could not have recovered this blog without you! You’ve made my week!

Anyway, in between worrying about this blog, I have been working hard on things here and there for different projects. I’ll be posting more images soon! I was able to complete an image for The Morae River. Of course it’s of a Mardik (there are four different species on the island) they are my favorite genus. However, new creatures are on the way.

Lots of projects coming up and lots of updates. These characters are from a private project I’m currently working on. Lots of fun! I love drawing dinosaurs way too much! I’ll show more later as the project progresses and opens up more. I’ll also be posting some work from a book collaboration I’m working on with Opal Palmer Adisa. I’m honored and very excited to work with this author on one of her personal book projects. I can’t wait to get started!

Some other great new is that I will start co-running the Creature Planets over on CGhub.com. My partner in crime is the incredibly talented Mr. Ogi Grujic. We will be working as a team to come up with topics for the community to participate in and lead in critiques and discussion about works being produced for the topics.. I’m very excited and honored to be a leader of this community challenge. I’m able to work with so many talented artists! Hopefully Ogi and I can help carry on what Mike Corriero had started – its a very high bar!

Anyway, I’m off to finish my evening with a bit of reading. I’ve added my good reads widget so you can check out some of the books I’m into.

Good news! I will be participating in a show in St. Louis this July called Drawgasmic. Lots of really talented individuals are part of this exhibition andI’m really glad to be a part of it. Here is a progress shot of a drawing I started yesterday. I’m hoping to get it finished this week along with one other. Trying to get a lot done before I go an vacation. Me and my partner John Mathis are off to The Mission today to do some research for a project he’s working on. Can’t say much about it yet until it goes live.

In other news we’ve also decided to create a small company for our website and graphic design. This is the sketch for the logo but we hope to have it up soon. It says specializing in artists websites but we do other stuff too – this logo will change a bit. Anyway, I’ll post more about Oranda later. I’m off to S.F.

I’ve been working recently on improving my drawing in the computer and I have been experimenting with The Morae River in this…This image below is of the updated fugamus.

Because I’ve switched to a digital pencil I am able to work much larger than I was able to before. This drawing here is 16X12 and will make a nice print one day. No to mention the detail is very, very clean. The effect is basically the same, minus the step of scanning it into the computer. While I do still draw with an analogue pencil for myself, I imagine The Morae River and my concept art work will all be digital very soon. I’m finding I make better choices in the computer and I am more willing to push things. I was at first apprehensive of moving into the computer, especially for work pertaining to The Morae River. I’m finding that I had way too much fun drawing this male fugamus out…

So here is the final for my re-take on Snarf. This was done for CG hub’s Creature Planet Contest. I’ve been experimenting with starting and finishing pieces in the computer. I’m really pushing to keep my “penciled look” though all of it.

I’ll also be exploring some prehistoric work for a bit. I started with the Raptor and dropped the subject but am interested to pick it back up again.

Here is a sketch for a saber toothed tiger. Also coming soon in the prehistoric section: a brachiolope. – for some friends.

In progress post of the new species of Mardik that will show up on the blog soon!

Here is some info on the species:

“The black mardik is the second largest tree climber in Yabun forest as well as the second largest mardik. These mardiks are social and live in large troops of up to 30 members. The whole of the troop is made up of smaller family troops, each governed by a dominant male and female. Dominance is decided through some intimidation but is mostly carried through bloodlines and offspring. This species is the most numerous species of mardik in Yabun Forest. While each female only has one cub at a time, she can give birth up to 6 times a year. Black mardiks are great mothers and even better babysitters. The entire troop collectively looks after the young that is produced over the year. Because there is so much help with looking after young, breeding females can focus their attention on feeding and having more young.”

December is finally here and I’m officially finished with college! It seemed like forever and no time at all. I’ll miss seeing everyone in the program all the time. I really did have an amazing time but Im glad to be done with it…

On to other things.

I’ve begun more writing on the Morae River recently. I’m really wanting to dive deeper into families and explore different species and how they are evolving in the area. I’m starting with the mardiks and will be introducing three new species on the blog hopefully later this month. I’ll also be generating family tree graphics for the families I’m exploring. For right now I’m exploring Pernixids – the family that mardiks and balas belong to. Most of the species on the blog now will be getting makeovers and adjustments as I move deeper into Solturna. I’m hoping to generate more plant species as well and start to put them into families as well. Plants seem to get neglected…

The project has become a lot bigger and I’m hoping to shed some light on where Orcura sits in relation to us. Many viewers have been asking about it but I am a bit reluctant to give it all away at once. Either way, Im glad to be working on it again. It really is where my head is most of the day but I did need a small break to think about where I wanted to carry the project.

Expect new dinosaur work on brynnart.com soon as well as some other projects in January.

the photo above is one I took going over the golden gate not too long ago…I’ve only been over it twice in the 4 years I’ve lived in the bay area.

As you might have noticed, my blog has been moved here, to FishHook Studio. FishHook Studio wasn’t really being used so I decided to keep my sketches here. APE has come and gone. It was quite the event for us and I’m sad it’s over. Four of us shared a table: myslef, John Mathis, Annika Green and Jonathan Zajdman – all incredibly talented. Needless to say we had a blast and sold a good amount of work. I was surprised to learn that most people who came up to my table knew what the Morae River was. Thanks to all of you who came out to see me, it was great to meet some of you! It was great to know that the blog is being read by a few people out there!

Im currently working on getting things done for my show next week. Things seem to be moving smoothly so far and I’m lucky to have great support from friends and family in getting everything organized. Once this show is over the Morae River will be put on the shelf for a good month so I can take a break. I really want to work on some solid illustration work until next year. I’ve been itching to do some painting down in the studio.

APE is around the corner and Im getting excited to be around an amazing collection of people this weekend. The Morae River book won’t be ready for APE but It will be here for the show at the end of this month. Its really starting to look finished now and Im excited to hold it in my hands. I will have prints and a few smaller items for sale at my table this weekend. If you like comics and art, I recommend you come out and see whats up. It’s going to be a really great event!

The Morae River exhibition will also be hosting a donation which goes to RiverNetwork.org, an organization that helps restore rivers in America. Im hoping it all works out, I should be receiving all the paperwork soon to make it “official”.

Midterms are almost over but are taking up more time than I’d like. Im ready for this semester to be over…
