Redwood

I’ve been busy lately with work and projects as well as friends and family coming to visit. August has been a fun and busy month! We have two friends coming out to visit this weekend and we are very excited to show them around our home. This will be their first trip to California!

John’s dad came to visit last weekend and we took a trip to see the Redwoods. Such an amazing place; especially right now. Because of all of the rains, the forest has exploded with green moss, lichen, saplings and new ferns everywhere! It looks almost prehistoric! It was nice to go and “re charge” for a bit. Sadly, I don’t get to make it up there all too often.

I’ve been messing around with personal work lately too. Work on The Red Valley is picking up and I’ve begun to to lay out species ideas and thoughts about how the project will flow. I should be posting work on the blog come November this year. I’m very excited about the project and am really looking forward to exploring the concept.

I’ve been working on the illustration section of my website too – trying to round it out with more personal work lately. This is an image a created about a week ago.

These two images are live now. They were created for Imagine FX’s Q&A section. As always, I have a lot of fun answering the questions and creating work for the magazine. I’m fortunate in that I get to answer questions that tend to relate to creatures and such. :) You can see them in the current issue (in the US now) here –> Imagine Fx – Issue 73

That’s it for now. Fall is looking busy! :)

I can’t believe it’s already August. 2011 is just flying by! This year has been excellent so far. I’ve learned so much and I’ve gotten to work on some really exciting and fun projects; some of which I have yet to share! I really can’t wait to either. This is a work in progress – a profile study of something I’m working on in my spare time.

Lately, I’ve been trying to work out more human characters and I’m going to need it. I’ll need a lot of practice for another upcoming project I’ll be involved in. This is the more successful out of the few I’ve sketched out this last week:

This character is actually directly based off of a man I saw in the Mission in San Francisco last month. I was on my way to give a talk at my former college when this man came walking down the street, cat and all. His boom-box was blaring metal too! It was a pretty remarkable sight. This can only mean I need to spend more time in the Mission to observe more amazing people for my sketchbook.

That’s it for now. More updates coming soon!

These two images were created a while ago but they are in the current issue of Imagine FX magazine and can be seen in the Q&A section. I really loved creating these two paintings. It’s an awesome creature design issue! Bobby Chiu created an excellent cover for it! You can check it out here –> Imagine FX – Issue 72

Also, I just found out that I am on the confirmed exhibitor list for Spectrum Fantastic Art Live! - A new fantasy art convention being held in Kansas City, May of next year! It should be really awesome and the list of exhibitors is pretty incredible. Needless to say, I have lots of work to get done before next Summer!

This is a work is progress. I help run an activity on CGhub called Creature Planets. It’s a creature design activity and the current topic is to design a new mutant creature Villain for the TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) Universe. I chose to create a Honey Badger chick! Excited to get her done – I think I might put together a tutorial for this image if I get the time.
